Minecraft is set to introduce the spear, its first tiered weapon in well over a decade, with the launch of the highly anticipated Mounts of Mayhem update. Scheduled for roll-out during the 2025 holiday season, the Minecraft Mounts of Mayhem update will introduce new exploration and combat features to the game.
A major reason behind the popularity of tiered weapons in Minecraft is the progression path they offer. Players can consistently improve these weapons across different tiers by collecting and using resources in the survival sandbox. On one hand, the addition of different tiers, such as copper and netherite, has further enhanced this game mechanic over time. On the other hand, when it comes to tiered weapons, the devs haven’t made any inclusions since adding the hoe during the game’s alpha development phase in 2010. However, that is soon going to change with the Minecraft update arriving later this year.
New Minecraft Tiered Spear Weapon Will Make Jousting Possible
As part of the upcoming Mounts of Mayhem update, a new tiered Minecraft weapon, the spear, will become available for fans. Using two sticks and an ingot, players can craft a spear, which they can use to jab at their enemies or charge at them. It’s worth noting that the damage inflicted by the charge attacks will increase with their speed. Naturally, the spear opens up the possibility to engage in some fierce jousting, where it can be used not only to deal damage but also to knock back and eventually dismount the opponent. However, the effectiveness of such charge attacks will depend on how long the player has been holding the weapon.
After a certain amount of time, the spear’s weight will automatically cause it to lower, in which state it can still hurt opponents, but without any knockback effect. Importantly, spears of a higher tier will be heavier and thus offer less time for players to execute charge attacks. Apart from players, these spears will also be equipped by zombies atop zombie horses, who will be present in Minecraft‘s survival mode as well. These spear-sporting zombies will come out at night in the game, making it harder for players to survive after sunset.
While there’s still some time before players can get their hands on the spear, Minecraft recently released a different update, titled The Copper Age, on September 30. This particular content drop introduced copper as a new equipment tier, alongside some other changes, such as the newly added Copper Golem mob and shelf-crafting tweaks. Thanks to the new update’s emphasis on copper, it would be fair to expect the copper ore to become more valuable in the game than it was before.
